The secret sauce of any controlling entitity is to weaken foundations of belief. Once weakened, a fictional world can be created that people will believe is good for them. Make people support a party that ultimately gives the party full control to make the elite more powerful. In the end, the middle class and lower class are left far behind while they continue to deny evidence that their lives have grown worse under the leadership they support. The problem is when identity is wrapped up in politicis, the psychology underpinnings do not want to admit it made a mistake. The psychology does not want to self destruct.
