A study from Cambridge found that consistent on both right and left show mental rigidity. A study from the Netherlands showed four broad underlying psychological characteristics of people who gravitate towards extremisms: 1) psychological distress about society, 2) simplistic, black-and-white perception of the world, 3) overconfidence in their own judgements and beliefs, 4) decreased intolerance of different groups and opinions compared to moderates.
